Check USCIS case status online

If you have a receipt number for an application filed with USCIS, you can check your USCIS case status online. First you need to locate your receipt number.

USCIS receipt numbers start with three letters. Those first three letters indicate which USCIS service center is processing your application. We will decipher those first three letters from USCIS receipt numbers immediately below.

USCIS receipt numbers starting with:

EAC – Eastern Adjudication Center, now Vermont Service Center;
VSC – Vermont Service Center;
WAC – Western Adjudication Center, now California Service Center;
CSC – California Service Center;
LIN – Nebraska Service Center;
NSC – Nebraska Service Center;
SRC – Southern Regional Center, now Texas Service Center;
TSC – Texas Service Center;
MSC – Missouri Service Center or National Benefits Center;
NBC – National Benefits Center
YSC – Potomac Service Center
IOE – ELIS (e-filing)

Asylum office receipt numbers

You will not be able to check USCIS case status of an asylum case online. Receipt numbers in asylum cases also start with three letters. However, those receipt numbers will not be recognized by the USCIS case status check tool on the USCIS website.

The first three letters in receipts for asylum cases are deciphered as follows:

ZAR – Arlington Asylum Office;
ZCH – Chicago Asylum Office;
ZHN – Houston Asylum Office;
ZLA – Los Angeles Asylum Office;
ZMI – Miami Asylum Office;
ZNK – Newark Asylum Office;
ZNY – New York Asylum Office;
ZSF – San Francisco Asylum Office;

To check the status of your asylum application, you should go to the asylum office that has jurisdiction over your case and make an inquiry in person.

Please see the page of your asylum office on the www.uscis.gov website to find out when they accept walk-ins.

Sample USCIS receipt

An applicant gets a USCIS receipt for every application filed. Those USCIS receipts are printed on form I-797C and approval notices come on form I-797.

Below is an image of the top part of the form I-797, Notice of Action, with USCIS receipt number highlighted by the red box.
