Should I participate?
It does not cost anything to participate in the lottery while as a prize one can obtain a residence permit and authorization to work in the U.S., free education, and in future a U.S. citizenship and a visa-free entry to many countries of the world. This is not a complete list of benefits that come with winning the lottery.
Many people think “why do I need this? Life here is good enough! “Others shrug their shoulders and say that they have nothing and no one waiting for them in the United States. Such people usually have never been abroad, they do not speak English and are afraid of change. And even they should play the lottery at least in order to see the world or to allow their children to choose where they would like to live.
It is not necessary to know English in order to survive in the United States. A lot of people of different nationalities live in America in their communities and do not speak English. Elderly people are even allowed to take the U.S. citizenship exam in their native language.
For those who still doubt whether to participate in the lottery or not, I do not advise doing a full research of all the pros and cons of living in America, and spending time searching the Internet. People’s stories about life in the United States are inconsistent, their perception largely depends on the person, his outlook, character, and demands, as well as on the State or City where he lived, the weather, or just luck. Those who have won the green card lottery should do this research before they decide on what State to move to, whom to travel with, and whether they should move anyway. After all, the winner is not obliged to obtain a green card and move to the United States.
If you decide to play, keep in mind that you are not guaranteed to win. Many people fill out an application and wait for the result with certainty that they will win. When they get a negative result, they do not participate in the lottery ever again. One has to play every year in order to maximize one’s chances of winning.
